Journal #3 Ch. 9-12
Maybe I wasn't completely honest. Shmuel might be my actual favorite character. I like this next section a lot because Shmuel gets introduced. It also gets us out of the house at Out-With. I was getting to be a little bit sick of that house. And, Bruno get's a friend.
Shmuel is a very interesting person. Well, for one, the Germans don't even think of him as a person. He is skinny, but he is built a lot like Bruno. He is also respectful and doesn't point out Bruno's ignorance. He has a good attitude even though he is treated terribly. To me, he is the most admirable character in this book.
Unlike Shmuel, the Fury is not respectful at all.. I just despise this guy. I mean, how do you just kill a group of people because they're different. Well anyway, I like how the author shows the Fury. He makes him look disrespectful and rude. Even still, the Fury gets shown up by his girlfriend. That's not what I expected. I would have expected a rude Fury and an obedient girlfriend. I like what the author did here though.
The author then gives us background knowledge on Shmuel. I find this bit interesting because Shmuel's respected father and family were swept up and put into a concentration camp. It just makes me sick, thinking of the concentration camps. They were evil places of hate. I especially like the part about of chocolate. Boys do like candy Well, I guess everybody does. At the very end, Bruno thankfully realizes that he shouldn't tell his family about Shmuel.
